National and International Jobs for Cooks!

Most kids have a job they dream about doing when they are growing up whether that be a fireman, an astronaut, a rock star or whatever. For me, I always wanted to be a professional chef in one of the finest restaurants at one of the best hotels in the world, and although that dream didn't dwindle, I never followed it through for some reason. Looking back, it may have been good choice of career as job prospects for chefs and cooks are excellent both on a national and international level. In fact, you can't open the employment pages of any popular publication these days without jobs for cooks all over the place. Wow! What a missed opportunity.

Perhaps for the young mind of a student, the most difficult thing to approach in life is choosing the right career! Okay, so maybe I'm exaggerating a bit. But, finding the right career for yourself is no easy task. First of all, you can't possibly know what you will enjoy more than anything? Second of all, what if you're no good at it? These are major questions to address, and although I always knew that I wanted to become an executive chef of sorts, for some reason I never followed through with my dream job. Maybe it was the fear of failure, the long hours, and a whole bunch of other what-ifs going through my mind, who knows, but with the abundance of jobs for cooks around these days, it could have been a very stable profession in this world of uncertainty.

A close friend of mine somehow knew since birth what his calling was. I remember the first time I asked him before we went to college. I was just posing the rhetorical question of "What do you want to do after school?" He immediately answered, "I'm going to be a chef." That was unexpected, as he never spoke about this before which was a little strange considering he knew about my passion for cooking!

If you look into jobs for cooks, you will quickly see that you can really go all over the map with this field. I mean think about how many different countries, cuisines and ways of cooking there are. Food is everywhere and there are oodles of ways to prepare it. My buddy once told me that I shouldn't confuse the two terms, cook and chef. He claims that a cook is someone who follows recipes and cooks things. Sure, they may turn out wonderful, but he/she is still just a cook. Then there is a chef. This is someone who creates. This is the top dog who makes the rules as he/she goes. They definitely don't need any cookbooks or direction. Anyway, I guess that means we shouldn't confuse jobs for cooks with jobs for chefs right?

Well not exactly. You see, the bottom line is that anybody in the business of cooking wants to be called a cook, not a chef. The reason is simple, the higher up the ladder you are, the further removed from the food you become, and at the end of the day, the culinary one, went into this profession for the food right. In the hierarchy of the kitchen, there are four basic positions which are as follows: Pantry Cook, Line Cook, Sous Chef, and Executive Chef. When you get into 'chef' status you are more into managing the kitchen than the food, and that is why those that have a real passion for cooking prefer to remain as one of the first two.



Anyway, if you're an eager beaver in the kitchen, and wondering what to do with your life, you might want to consider becoming a cook. The hours are long and the jobs are often demanding, but if that your passion, you shouldn't really have any problems with that.

Searching the Internet is a wonderful way to discover new jobs for cooks. There are likely to be many positions open near you. Most of this depends on what sort of jobs for cooks you're looking for. Do you want to cook barbeque, Italian, or maybe vegetarian dishes? This is something you should ask yourself before searching. Get online and take advantage of the various job search engines. All the latest and greatest jobs for cooks are within your grasp.

So, what'll it be, chef jobs? You could look at becoming a pastry chef, these are always in demand, or maybe a restaurant chef, or should I say cook! Then again, perhaps you will just be happy as a home chef and enjoy cooking up tasty dishes for friends and family while going about your 9-5 in some dreary office for the next 40 plus years.
