A Brief Look at Jobs in Photography

There are many jobs in photography and it's not just about weddings, family portraits, and fancy shots of people pets either. But getting into the game can be a little difficult as the best paying and most interesting jobs in photography are extremely competitive, but don’t be put off by that if working in this industry is a dream of yours. Just look at it as a challenge and if you push hard enough, you will get the career you want.

Of course, way of taking pictures has changed a lot in recent years since the introduction of digital photography and modern technology, which now allows photographers to deliver the goods in an instant. The photography game has become so much faster, easier to manipulate, and more competitive than at any time previous.

Another great thing about jobs in photography these days is that all the images can be stored on compact disks or other devices, including flash disks and memory sticks for digital cameras. Digital software is broadening the field of photographic art without any question of doubt, and digital portfolios are now commonplace, as budding photographers become increasingly knowledgeable of the technology which assist their aims.

But as I said in the opening paragraph, the opportunities around for jobs in photography are enormous and not restricted just to the high street. In fact many photographers work only in specific areas such as commercial fields, portraiture, religious or school ceremonies and weddings, industrial, abstract, wildlife and so on. Whether real of fantasy, if there's a market for the image there's money to be made.



Of course, the most successful freelance photographers are those that either a) find a niche and milk it without competition, or b) diversify and get good in many different areas. But jobs in photography are not always glamorous. For example, what could be remotely interesting about taking a still shot of a bag of fertilizer for a farming journal, or a reel of cable for a telecommunications publication?

A very well respected professional photographer in my town explained to me one day that there are 2 types of photograph, which are pictures for show and pictures for dough (that's money to the non Brits!). His point was that if you want to make good money in photography, then you can't always be too fussy at what you snap at.

Only you will know where your interests are, but if you have a natural talent for taking good photographs, there are many opportunities around if you search for them. Jobs in photography really are in abundance! Yes competition is tougher in some areas than others, but with a little patience and persistence you should be able to get what you want given time, whether that's work in commercial and industrial fields, scientific areas, news, fine arts, government, advertising or even weddings and family portraits.
